What Happens As Your Dog Gets Older

Posted on the August 31st, 2009 under Uncategorized by author

Q. Is there any special training equipment that should be used for the older dog?
A. No. A chain collar and six-foot web leash are applicable for all training sessions with a normal healthy dog, regardless of age.

Q. Why don’t dogs get cavities except in rare instances?
A. It is speculated that the enamel surface of the dog’s teeth is harder and more impenetrable to pathogenesis than that of humans. Another factor could be that the dog is presumed to not to have amylase in the saliva as humans do; so while human starch-digestion begins in the mouth, the dog’s starch-digestion starts further down the intestinal tract. Some research has since discovered salivary enzymes.

Q. Do dogs have to go out for walks more often as they get older?
A. Yes, but for different reasons. If we are dealing with a normal, healthy dog, he can get along on the frequency he is used to. However, if you have an older dog that is beginning to show arthritis problems (dog symptoms), it is a good idea to get him moving more often during the day. The older dog can also tend to get lazy, and circulation is improved with moderate walks.

Q. Is a dog’s bladder weaker at eight or nine years old?
A. Most of the time, what is interpreted as a weak bladder is actually a bladder infection or an ensuing kidney problem. Bladder infections can be common, regardless of age, and kidney disease is very pronounced in the older dog. Two of the most common problems in the older dog are bad heart and bad kidneys.

Q. If the older dog begins to urinate in the house for apparently no reason, after being housebroken for many years, would you assume this to be a medical problem rather than spite-work?
A. Yes, most definitely. You must first eliminate any dog health problems before you chastise your dog for disobedience. Medically speaking, if he is urinating in the house, this is most likely a bladder problem. If he is drinking more water and also urinating in the house, it could more likely be a kidney problem.

Q. Is exercise bad for the older dog?
A. No. Exercise is very good for a dog unless there are definite contraindications, such as heart problems. All exercise should be within reason. Jumping hurdles is exercise that the older dog should not be asked to do, but walking provides healthful exercise for all dogs of any age.

Q. Do older dogs need a different diet?
A. Yes. They should have less total protein but a higher quality protein. Different age dogs do require different diets. Young dogs need a high concentration of protein, middle-aged dogs can thrive on the protein that exists in the average good-quality dog food, and older dogs need lesser amounts of higher-quality protein. Excess protein produces more nitrogenous wastes, which means more work for the kidneys. Dogs with kidney problems could be put on prescription dog food, or small amounts of high-quality protein, such as in eggs, yogurt, tofu, ricotta, farmer cheese, cottage cheese, and hard mild cheeses, together with a lot of raw, grated vegetables. Kidney problems require low protein. Heart problems require low salt. Very often the two maladies go hand in hand. (Source: Dog Health Questions)

Finding What You Need on the Internet

Posted on the August 31st, 2009 under Uncategorized by author

There are a number of different every day ailments which we may suffer with which are not necessarily life-threatening but they can certainly be frustrating for those of us that have them. It is not necessary for us to go to a university in order to be able to solve them but we certainly do want to make sure that we have factual information before we try any kind of home remedy.

Many of these problems come in the form of skin conditions such as skin tags or warts. Although it is possible for us to get rid of these items at home, we need to make sure that we do so properly in order to avoid making the problem worse. A good example of this is using many of the home remedies for skin tags that may or may not cause an infection. The last thing that you would want to have happen is for you to be able to get rid of one of these problems on your own and then end up with another problem as a result.

It is often a better idea if you use the Internet in order to solve these problems in a totally different way. Instead of searching for a natural cure that may cause problems for you, why not search for a dermatologist in your area that will be able to take care of the problem for you? It might end up saving you a lot of frustration in the process.

Choosing a DVD Duplicator – Some Basic Questions to Consider

Posted on the August 30th, 2009 under Uncategorized by author

Every business is unique, so the applications and requirements for DVD copier are going to be unique. There are a variety of questions you should consider before purchasing a cd dvd duplicator. Once you answer these initial questions you will be on the right path in making an informed decision.

The first question you need to answer is what type of data do you need to duplicate? Will they be CD Audio, Video CD or DVD, or Photo CD or DVD or combinations of data types? If you are a church ministry, audio recording is the norm, and with certain duplicators this can be done while the sermon is in progress. This is also true for bands and musical groups that want to duplicate their own recordable DVDs or a live recording. These DVDs can be made “on-the-fly” with live event recorders featuring direct video input devices. Businesses and colleges that produce DVD catalogs use a combination – multi-media presentations, forms and even video. You’ll want to know the specific formats you anticipate duplicating so you can limit the duplicator models you consider to those that will support all of your required format types.

You should also try your best to estimate the number of recordable DVDs you’ll need to duplicate during some fixed time period. Be it a day, week, month or quarter, your volume requirements will play a very important role in narrowing down the universe of available models to the most appropriate ones. Certain DVD duplicating applications require very fast turnaround times for varying volumes of discs, while others have broad production windows with lots of advanced notice of the production requirement. Do you need to produce DVDs immediately after a meeting or recording session? Or do you have a longer window allowing you to mail out to customers? Short production window parameters will significantly narrow the list of appropriate duplicator models for you to choose, but if you have the luxury of long lead times, your options are fairly limitless.

What you want the physical disc to look like after it has been produced, and how it will be presented to the ultimate recipient of the disc is also important. Will you want a 4 color silk screen quality print on the surface of the disc to provide a professional look in a clear cover jewel case? Maybe you want to include your logo and some simple text, or perhaps you don’t require any identification on the disc at all. Whichever the case, you’ll want to determine your requirements in this area before you start comparing duplicator types and models.

Who will be using the machines is another factor. Are you going to be asking the office manager or department secretary to copy DVDs just like you ask him or her to make copies of your monthly activity report on the photocopier? Or perhaps you have someone with a high level of technical expertise who is going to produce the CDs for the next point release? Either way, you need to give some thought as to who the “users” will be. You don’t want to invest in a product that’s too difficult to use…and therefore isn’t, or one that’s real easy to use, but as a result doesn’t provide all of the features that the power users need.

Another important point to consider is whether or not you want to limit or maximize access to the CD DVD duplicators. Determine if your goal is to make it available to others just like any other office machine such as a fax or photocopier, or is it a tool that is better off locked where only authorized staff members can use it. Think this issue through before you make your purchase, and you’ll avoid any potential for ‘buyer’s remorse’.

Catering Ideas That Make A Difference

Posted on the August 30th, 2009 under Uncategorized by author

Catering ideas are fairly commonplace these days, and it really takes something special to stand out from the competition. Humdrum catering ideas that have been done to death years ago may get the job done, but they won’t do very much for getting your business’ name on the local social map.

The primary consideration in catering ideas is the specific cuisine you will specialize in. Nevertheless, you will also want to devote a healthy amount of time in thinking about your company name. There is quite a wide range of names of catering services out there, and some of them can get pretty imaginative. Most people initially think of going for a literal name that simply tells customers that they provide catering services and nothing more. While such names of catering establishments certainly do the basic job of giving the customers a name they can attach to your service, they don’t really help you stand out. You may be able to get more mileage with a more memorable and even a sort of whimsical name.

After you have tackled different catering name ideas and have made your choice, planning out the menu is the next logical step. This will hopefully be reflected in the business name and will definitely have to be planned with the needs of the potential customers in mind as well as what events you will be targeting.

Your initial instincts may lead you to plan out a menu that offers as wide a range of dishes as possible. While this may seem like a good idea at the start, this can actually dilute the uniqueness of your service by giving your customers a vague idea of what your specialty really is. In addition, focusing your menu on too many dishes will make it that much harder for you to excel in a specific area. It may therefore be a better option to choose one or two styles of cooking and focus on developing your competence as much as possible.

It is also important to decide what the scale of your operations will be. A more modest gathering would be a good target to start out with. Once you have racked up a few successful small sized catering events, you could always expand your business to accommodate larger gatherings in the future.

Imaginative catering ideas are of course essential, but they have to go hand in hand with quality. Good food and good service delivered in a professional and timely manner is key to success in this field. Get those elements together and deliver them consistently, and your catering ideas can work wonders for your business.

Should You Use Grass Carp For Aquatic Weed Control?

Posted on the August 29th, 2009 under Uncategorized by author

Mastering the plant life within a pond, or in any body of water is quite critical. Why is this you ask? Well, since for some reason or another, you’ve decided that you do not desire it there. Whether those plants have create a type of hindrance for swimmers, or have just simply stopped up the engine on your favorite boat, you want them to be gone, and there’s many ways to do this.

Of course you can use chemical substances, plastic lining, freezing, manually pulling them up, or perhaps even dye, but all of those are mighty inconvenient, and there is no promise that your pond, or even the fish, would ever be the same again following such an effort. So it’s time to look into different methods—techniques which won’t damage you OR your pond.

In nineteen sixty-three, a brand new fish was placed in the United States ecology, and this fish was known as the Grass Carp. This fish was purposefully integrated into the ecosystem for one reason of eradicating  aquatic plant life, and so far it’s lived up to it’s reputation. Here in the United States, the Grass Carp is often referred to as the White Amur, presumably because of the fact that the word Carp holds derogatory interpretations here in the U.S., and the name “Amur” is a reference to the river which this fish comes from, the river which runs the border between China and Russia.

The Grass Carp, is what’s known as an invasive species, meaning that it will reproduce and overtake any ecosystem which it is introduced in (similar to humans), however science has come far, and though it took a lot of time, and a lot of gene manipulation, sterilizing the Grass Carp became standard procedure everywhere in the world so that it’s integration doesn’t hurt or destroy the local ecology.

An additional thing to take into account, is that the Grass Carp does not consume every kind of grass, naturally it loves plant life, and will eat the vast majority of it, but as humans, there’s things that it enjoys more than others. A few of the things that the Grass Carp does enjoy, are:

Coontail
Spikerush
Smartweed
Bladderwort
Bulrush
Water hyssop
Eelgrass

There’s many others, and a quick trip to a library, an Internet query, or talking with a professional will immediately reveal the things a grass carp will consume.

When purchased in large amounts, Grass Carp is pretty inexpensive, ranging from about $10-20 per fish, which is very reasonable when you consider how long it will last; surviving for about ten to eleven years.

In some states, you will need to acquire a license prior to putting Grass Carp in any sort of water, even if it is owned by you. To discover if that’s required, talk to the game warden in your area, or simply examine the regulations of your state, since that info is freely accessible to anyone who needs it.

As you can see, Grass Carp are a great alternate means to utilizing chemical compounds, or even lining your pond with plastic, because not just are these perfect for ridding you of unwanted plant life, you should additionally keep in mind that it’s an interdependent relationship, you provide the thing that they desire, and in return they provide a service to you, preventing you from having to do this on your own. Overall, this is a great deal.

Family Business Management

Posted on the August 29th, 2009 under Uncategorized by author

Introduction

What is understood by the term ‘family business management’? Does it mean a business managed by one member of a family or by many members of a family who are retained in the business? It could be that all the family members who are part of the business have an equal share of the profits and therefore have an equal say in the decisions to be made in the business. Alternatively it might be that the family member designated as the Managing Director makes all the business decisions without necessarily needing to consult other members of the family.

However the business is organised, the understood view of a family business is that it is owned and run by a family, and members of that family work together to make the business successful. There are many variations of how the management of the business works, but ultimately it is a privately owned company and all the profits are retained for the benefit of the business and the family.

Managing the Family Business

A family run business has many complicated dimensions to the interpersonal dynamics compared to a public company that can make or break the owners. The dynamics of personal and professional issues combined create an added pressure which can hinder good business decisions. Unresolved family conflicts will undoubtedly be carried into the workplace and impact the motivation and productivity of everyone involved.

I have current experience of managing a family business where we find it is important to have our different areas of responsibility. I am the Managing Director and main Project Manager, then we have the Accounts and Admin Manager and the Chairman who presides over the meetings and keeps an eye on the overall direction and functioning of the business. We have found over the years that there are some important issues which have to be resolved in order to work compatibly together. Mainly they are the issues around boundaries. Respecting each other’s different skills and trusting they can do their job well are key elements. If there are new skills to learn fundamental training is offered to ensure that person can do the job effectively.

It is important to realize managing any business in today’s environment is a complicated process but when you have the added dimension of family dynamics it can so easily get out of hand. One of the crucial elements to resolve is the historic patterns of relating between family members. Usually there is a lack of awareness that these patterns exist because they are habitual and familiar. However once they start to impact on the effectiveness of the business these issues need to be considered so that changes can be made and the issues resolved. One obvious example is where a child works with a parent. It is usually difficult for the parent to see the child as a responsible adult and still treats that person in the old habitual way. The child might then feel devalued, disempowered and impotent because of the old habit of respecting and obeying the parent. This will produce a lot of frustration, anger or even rage generating manipulative and destructive behaviour.

Search Engine Optimisation (or Optimization in American) is the full title of the SEO acronym and because of its popularity we have had to employ new staff. My mother works in my business as finance manager so we have had to work very hard to ensure that the work relationship functions correctly.

Leadership

One of the prime issues in a family run business is that of leadership. There has to be a leader whom everyone should be able to respect and is capable of making sound business decisions. If two family members are in a power struggle to be the leader then the business will suffer. I have seen this happen in a firm that was not between family members and it nearly brought the company down. Loyalties become divided and business decisions are often made for the wrong reasons resulting in loss of production and revenue. So when embarking on a family business the leadership needs to be decided at the outset. Once the decision has been made then the rest of the members working in the company need to support that decision and not undermine it.

There are different styles of leadership:-

The autocratic Ruler -This sometimes works as long as the rest of the family are willing to do what he/she wants. But long term I don’t think the autocratic ruler is particularly good for business. When the time comes for someone else to take the helm there could be no one strong enough to fulfil the role.

An example of autocratic leader is the father of a family friend who was a successful plastics manufacturer. The son was encouraged to follow a path of water ski trick jumping and became a member of the British team. His father did not encourage him to continue in further education with the belief that the son didn’t need it as he would run the business after him. The day came when the son could no longer continue with his sport because of injury and settled down the work in the business. After about six months he had a big falling out with his father and left. The problem then was he had no other skills options open to him other than selling insurance. After about 3 weeks he returned to work in his father’s business because it was very lucrative and had a level of status for him.

The democratic Ruler – will encourage each individual to speak about their area of responsibility or their view of a business strategy. All members will be listened to respectfully and their view considered. This way a full and fruitful debate can take place in order to find the best decision for any one topic. New or younger family members will be supported to learn the business and encouraged to broaden their outlook so they become another valuable asset to company.

If the autocratic father had been more far sighted and encouraged his son to further his education, then find work with another firm for a period of time and left him the option to come and work in the company when he had gained experience elsewhere, he would have benefitted from a more mature, confident, creative and experienced manager who could have brought new ideas to the organisation and participated fully in all aspects of the company policies. The son’s enthusiasm for modern technology could move the business forward into the modern age. Before any children of a family business are eligible to take over, a policy of working with another company for at least two years would benefit the succession in the long run

As a company offering specialist web designs we pride ourselves on delivering the specification to the customer on time and within budget.

Conflict Resolution

Family businesses can be a minefield of unresolved conflict and resentment. It is important to find healthy ways of settling conflicts before even embarking on the path of family business management. When we first set up together in our family business we agreed that if we were not happy with some behaviour or something that was said, then we would say how we felt and give the other person the opportunity to amend it in some way. The most important thing for us was to listen to each other and respect the other person’s point of view. So when difficult decisions needed to be made to ensure the survival and the profitability of the business, discussion and argument, chewing over the policies and relevant information were signs of healthy processes on which to base sound business decisions. By discussion and communicating our individual views and ideas we were able to arrive at agreed actions for the good of the business.

Attitudes and Values

Being part of a family business means for the most part the attitudes and values are shared. In a regular company there are many assorted attitudes and values which generate tensions when working together. Listening and understanding each other is Key to good working relationships. One of the benefits of having a family business is intuitively knowing the other members and being able to trust them with your life if necessary. Even if there are disagreements you will know exactly the integrity and reliability of each individual. (Or not as the case may be!)

Well Known Family Businesses

When looking at the commercial world there are hundreds of family run businesses both large and small. Some are very well known companies such as the Ford, Murdoch and the Mars family, others are only known locally like my family butcher. But whatever their size there are only a small percentage of businesses which have been successfully passed down through the generations.

Rupert Murdoch the son of Keith who started the original newspaper empire in Australia, has built up a huge global network of media and entertainment companies worth millions and is still in charge at 77 with his son James as a possible heir. In the case of Ford the family now in the fourth generation own 40% of the voting stock but Mars is still 100% family owned and is not floated on the stock market. Frank and Ethel Mars started the company in 1923 and were responsible for inventing the Milky Way Bar. Their Son Forrest fell out with his father and the story goes that his father gave him a significant sum of money and said ‘go and run your own company’. He came to England and set up the factory in Slough making Mars Bars, later branching out into make pet food (Pedigree Petfoods) based in Melton Mowbray. His sons John and Forrest Mars Jr, were educated and trained to take over the business. When old Mr Mars retired he set up a small company making specialist chocolates so he would be kept busy while his sons got on with running the global business.

My local butcher Robert inherited his shop from his father who inherited from his father. The originator had two sons who worked in the shop and now their sons run the business together which is still organised in the traditional way. It is very successful even during these times of crisis. The most famous family firm in the UK of course is the Royal family who live and work the business for life. There is a quite a revolution going on in the retail market today. Whereas shopping over the last 30 years has appeared to become a national pastime, many people are now turning to the internet to shop. So many businesses are waking up to the idea that if they want to survive the recession they need to offer their goods and services on line.

For a thriving and vibrant site SEO web design is the route to any successful modern sales and service company.

The issue of family pressure and entitlement seems to be a major cause of over 70% of family owned businesses failing to survive succession.

There is an enormous list of larger family run businesses in the world. Often the instigator of such family firms build up the business from the ground and once they become very successful the parent hopes the children will carry on the business. Sometimes this happens, but more often than not the children show very little interest in working as hard as their parent. They do not seem to have the motivation or drive to carry the business forward and often do not have the talent of the parent.

A good example of this is the Mower family that produced the Neways products which they sold via multi level marketing across the world. They had seven children and the father, who was an industrial chemist, developed a skin product for his wife who had always suffered badly from Acne. Once he started doing research into products available in the stores he discovered that they were full of chemicals that, as a chemist, he’d had to wear protective clothing when handling because they were considered dangerous. From this beginning he developed other health supplements and through the network marketing they became so successful they made millions of dollars. The children of the family having worked for a time in other companies came in to join the family firm. The maintained they would always keep the company in the family and it would never be floated on the stock market.

However as is the way of the world, success spoiled them. The parents suddenly separated and divorced. At first they announced they would continue to run the company together but in the end they sold it to a group in the Netherlands who now run the company. Although the Mower children had worked outside the family firm I always got the impression that they did not manage their departments particularly well and showed none of the talent and drive of either of the parents.

Inheritance

It may be important to tackle the issue of succession in the business especially if the owner of the business has more than one child. In many cases it is predictable the children will fight over the ownership of the business if it has not been made clear who will inherit. There may be a temptation to skimp on education thereby limiting the development of the successor. To avoid these kinds of situations one idea is to eliminate the feelings of entitlement. It might be just a matter of planning. Having a defined succession guide will enable the children to earn the right to succession and find their effective roles enabling them to work harmoniously together in the business.

Conclusion

Running a family business can be a rewarding and satisfying career with the added bonus of working in a familiar environment where trust is implicit. However family conflict will inevitably affect working relationships so it is preferable and healthy to separate business from personal matters. This allows the business owner to make decisions with less bias and more flexibility for the betterment of the company.

Even if all the members of the family do succeed in having a good business relationship, living separate lives outside of work with exposure to a greater variety of ideas and stimuli, which family members can bring to the workplace, will be of benefit. Probably the most important thing in managing a family business is ensuring that the whole family have a good relationship that will last even if the business doesn’t. Ultimately, blood is thicker than water and family is more important because the business can be replaced but your family cannot.
